A website without a proper security solution is fully exposed to the internet, and unscrupulous people with nothing but time on their hands can constantly chip away at your website’s script engine, seeking a “way in” to find your private customer data, either to damage or deface; or with the goal of using your server as a launchpad for illegal activities.

Security is more than just blocking some ports, most basic firewall configurations are still very vulnerable as not enough attention is paid to the content of packets entering your server through the firewall. Just blocking unused ports is not a solution, in order to truly secure your dynamic web presence, deep layer packet inspection is neccessary to check each packet passing through to your server. A simple firewall merely closes all ports except those necessary, leaving doors such as port 25, 80, 110, open to the world - if any vulnerability in the software exists, your server is fair game. Most serious root level exploits have victimized Webservers and Mailserver software running on servers, basic Software firewalls would not protect your server in such a scenario.
