Fast Disk Performance
Disk performance in virtualized environments is vital. Which is why we do not use SATA. The 7.2K RPM SATA might do great in a straight line (sequential reads/writes) but virtualization requires a vehicle that can turns too. 7 years of experience selling VPS servers showed us that 95% of IOPS are random reads/writes/split seeks, which totally bog down even the fastest of SATA hard disks (yes, even in 15 drive RAID 0 stripes), because of their extremely high latency and slow access times.
The difference between SAS and SATA, is the number of simultaneous transactions that can take place at one time. The highest number of simultaneous read/writes on a top performing SATA disk, such as the Western Digital RE4, is just under 150 IOPS irrespective of NCQ, or the number of queued transactions. A SAS disk, and we do mean a real SAS disk (10K or 15K, not a 7.2K disk with a SAS controller) such as the Cheetah 15K.7 will be able to go clear of 400 read/writes per second.

The Xen hypervisor is a unique open source hypervisor, which is inserted between the server’s hardware and the operating system. This provides an abstraction layer that allows each physical server to run one or more “virtual servers”, effectively decoupling the operating system and its applications from the underlying physical server.
The Xen hypervisor is also exceptionally lean—less than 150,000 lines of code. That translates to extremely low overhead and near-native performance for guests.
